THE FIELD GUIDE

Static vs dynamic QR codes

Choose direct static content or an editable hosted redirect based on the lifetime of your print and the changes you expect.

Two ways to reach the same page

A static QR code stores its final content directly. For a website this is usually the full page URL. A dynamic QR code stores a short URL that belongs to a redirect service. The phone reads that short URL and requests it; the service responds with the destination currently saved in the owner’s account. Both are ordinary QR patterns. The distinction is the link they contain and the infrastructure that the link needs after it has been printed. Choose the dependency deliberately before sending your artwork to print.

What can change after printing

You cannot change the modules on a printed static code. You can still update the page at the address it contains if you own that page. For many businesses a stable URL such as a menu page on their own domain is enough: the page content changes while its address stays fixed. Dynamic codes are useful when the destination address itself needs to change, for example moving from one booking platform to another or replacing a public file link that you cannot preserve.

Content that belongs in a static code

Wi-Fi credentials, phone numbers, short text, contact cards and calendar snapshots can be stored directly. That means the basic content is available without a hosted redirect, although the phone may need an appropriate app to act on it. A saved contact is a copy rather than a live address book subscription. A calendar event is also a snapshot. If a telephone number, password or event time changes, you need a new code and must replace old printed copies where accuracy matters.

When analytics change the decision

A direct static URL does not pass through QRForever, so QRForever cannot count its scans. You may be able to measure visits on the destination site, especially with campaign parameters, but a visit is not necessarily a unique scan. Dynamic redirects allow us to aggregate requests by day, country, device and operating-system family. Those aggregates help compare a print campaign over time. They do not reveal who scanned, prove that a purchase occurred or provide a precise view of all camera activity.

Budget for the dependency as well as the plan

Our static generator is free without sign-up. Our Free account includes three dynamic codes, Pro includes 100 and Business includes 1,000. Pro is €5 monthly or €49 yearly; Business is €15 monthly or €149 yearly. A downgrade never switches off dynamic redirects for non-payment. If your number of codes exceeds the new allowance, editing is blocked until you upgrade or delete enough codes. Destination availability and the redirect service are still operational dependencies. Custom domains are not available yet.

A practical choice before ordering print

List the changes you expect during the useful life of the material. If you own a stable destination URL and can maintain it, a static code may be the most direct choice. If a third-party URL is likely to change, dynamic gives you flexibility. Print a proof using the final dimensions, colour and finish. Scan it on more than one phone, check the resulting address and confirm any form works while signed out. Keep a readable fallback address beside the code, and avoid putting essential warnings or mandatory information only behind a scan.

Before your next print

Should I test before printing?
Yes. Use the final artwork, dimensions and material, scan with more than one phone and verify the content that opens.
